Best Low-Maintenance Garden Plants

You have plenty of work competing for your time and attention. So, if you want to have a garden, you’ll probably want less finicky plants.

You may think getting low-maintenance garden plants will sacrifice your garden’s beauty. But that’s not the case if you choose the right ones.

If you are looking for easy-to-maintain garden plants, here are five great choices.

Yarrow

Great for the middle or back of garden beds, yarrow has fern-like foliage and grows up to 3-feet tall. Summer blooms come in different colors – white, yellow, pink, and red – and due to their drought tolerance, they stay gorgeous even in dry summers. However, they don’t do well in windy conditions, shady conditions, and wet soils.

Hosta

If you love beautiful and bold foliage, hosta is a great choice. The varieties include puckered, quilted, strap-like, or cupped leaves, and hosta ranges in size from small to gigantic green leaves with shades of blue, yellow, and white. Just plant in the shade and let them take care of the rest. (But, keep an eye out for deer, rabbits, and slugs, which eat them.)

Catmint

Catmint blooms from May to September with attractive violet-blue flowers. Growing between one and a half to three feet tall, for maintenance, you will only need to trim taller varieties after blooming. Since catmint is drought-tolerant and deer-resistant, you won’t have to worry much.

Black-Eyed Susan

Golden-yellow daisy-like flowers with a dark brown center, Black-Eyed Susans bloom in late summer and grow between 2 and 3 feet tall. Drought-tolerant and deer- and rabbit-resistant, their only fault is they are spread by rhizomes, but that can be managed.

Coneflower

These attractive, daisy-like flowers are known to attract bees and butterflies because of their pollen. They also attract birds with their seeds.

Coneflower comes in many varieties but the most popular one is the purple coneflower.

Like the Black-Eyed Susan, they are drought-tolerant, deer- and rabbit-resistant. More so, they rarely have insect or disease attacks.

As you can see, there are a variety of low-maintenance garden plants from which to choose any of the above options will allow you to enjoy the best of both worlds: less time tending to garden plants and more time for work, life, and enjoying your garden.
